Kua Calculator

The Kua number (卦) comes from the Ba Zhai (八宅) system — "Eight Mansions" — one of the core disciplines of Feng Shui. Every person is assigned a unique number from 1 to 9 (the number 5 is replaced by 2 for women and 8 for men). Knowing your Kua number reveals which four compass directions support your energy — for work, health and relationships — and which four to avoid when positioning your bed, desk or home entrance.

The calculation is based on your birth year according to the Chinese solar calendar. One important rule: the Chinese year does not begin on January 1st but around February 4th (Lichun — Start of Spring). If you were born before that date, the previous year is used — the calculator handles this automatically. For men: add the digits of the birth year and subtract from 10 (or 100 for those born after 2000). For women: add the digits and add 5 (or 15 after 2000). The result is always reduced to a single digit from 1 to 9.

Kua numbers are divided into two groups with opposing auspicious directions. The East Group (东四命) includes numbers 1, 3, 4 and 9 — these people benefit from the N, S, E and SE directions. The West Group (西四命) includes numbers 2, 6, 7 and 8 — their auspicious directions are W, NW, NE and SW. The two groups are mirror images of each other: the best direction for the East Group is the worst for the West Group. When people from different groups share a home, finding a neutral compromise — such as a shared bedroom angled between their respective directions — is often the practical solution.

Applying Kua numerology doesn't require a renovation — often it's enough to rotate your desk or reposition your bed. Sheng Chi (生气) is your prosperity and career direction — sit facing it while working and during important meetings. Tian Yi (天医) supports health and recovery — sleep with your head pointing in this direction. Yan Nian (延年) strengthens relationships — position your sofa or dining table so you face this direction during family conversations. Fu Wei (伏位) is your stability and focus direction — ideal for studying and meditation. Avoid your inauspicious directions, especially Jue Ming (绝命), when placing your bed — this direction has the greatest weakening effect on your vital energy.
