How does compatibility work in Chinese astrology?

Chinese astrology evaluates couple compatibility based on the mutual relationships between the twelve zodiac signs. The system derives from the Five Elements theory (Wu Xing) and Earthly Branches (地支). Each sign has specific relationships with others — from natural harmony (六合, 三合) through neutrality to clash (六冲) or harm (六害). It is an ancient energy map that today helps better understand relationship dynamics.

What are the Six Harmonies 六合?

The Six Harmonies (六合, liù hé) are six pairs of signs that according to Chinese astrology complement each other like yin and yang. They are: Rat–Ox, Tiger–Pig, Rabbit–Dog, Dragon–Rooster, Snake–Monkey, Horse–Sheep. These pairs form natural harmony — each partner brings qualities the other lacks. They are considered the most auspicious combinations in love, friendship and business.

What are the Three Harmonies 三合?

The Three Harmonies (三合, sān hé) are four triads of signs sharing the same element: Rat–Dragon–Monkey (Water), Ox–Snake–Rooster (Metal), Tiger–Horse–Dog (Fire), Rabbit–Sheep–Pig (Wood). Two signs from the same triad have natural energetic compatibility — they understand each other's life rhythm, share similar values and mutually motivate each other.

Does a poor match mean a bad relationship?

No — the compatibility result is guidance, not a verdict. Many 六冲 (Six Clashes) couples form intense, lasting and passionate relationships. A difficult match simply means the couple may need more awareness, patience and communication. Conversely, a 'perfect match' does not guarantee happiness without mutual respect and work on the relationship.
