What Are Flying Stars?

Flying Stars (玄空飛星, Xuán Kōng Fēi Xīng) is an advanced Feng Shui system that analyses changing energies across time and space. Unlike Ba Zhai (the Kua number), where directions are fixed for a given person, Flying Stars shift position each year, each month and every 20 years (within a "Period"). The system uses 9 stars numbered 1–9, each with a specific element and character. Each year the stars "fly" to new sectors of a 9-square grid overlaid on a home or city. The year's centre star defines the general character of the year. This system is regarded as the most sophisticated school of classical Feng Shui.

The 9 Flying Stars — Characteristics

Star 1 White Water (一白水星): career, wisdom, flow, knowledge — auspicious in the north. Star 2 Black Earth (二黑土星): illness, stagnation, problems — neutralise with metal objects. Star 3 Jade Wood (三碧木星): conflict, gossip, arguments — neutralise with red elements. Star 4 Green Wood (四緑木星): creativity, learning, romance — activate with plants and water. Star 5 Yellow Earth (五黄土星): misfortune, illness, blockages — the most dangerous star; neutralise with metal (bells, metal wind chimes). Star 6 White Metal (六白金星): authority, power, leadership — favourable for career and status. Star 7 Red Metal (七赤金星): speech, compromise, but also theft and deception. Star 8 White Earth (八白土星): wealth and prosperity — particularly strong in Period 8 (2004–2023). Star 9 Purple Fire (九紫火星): celebration, expression, visibility — particularly strong in the current Period 9 (2024–2043).

Period 9 — A New 20-Year Cycle from 2024

From 4 February 2024, Period 9 (九運) began — a new 20-year cycle in the Flying Stars system. Period 9 is dominated by Star 9 Purple — element Fire, planet Mars. In Period 9, the following flourish: technology, social media, artistic expression, biotechnology, health and beauty. Southern sectors (traditionally linked to Star 9) gain importance. The year 2026 is the third year of Period 9 — the energy of Star 9 is building. Homes with a favourable Star 9 in key sectors (entrance, bedroom, office) have a particular advantage in this era. Period 8 (2004–2023) favoured the North-East sector and Star 8 — many rules from the previous era need updating.

Star Distribution in 2026

In 2026, the centre of the home is occupied by Star 3 Jade Wood (三碧木星). It brings the energy of conflict, arguments and excessive activity. A centre with Star 3 can introduce tensions into home life — neutralise with red decorative elements in the central zone. South sector: Star 2 Black — illness; be attentive to the health of those sleeping in southern rooms. North sector: Star 8 — residual wealth energy from Period 8, relatively auspicious. East sector: Star 9 Purple — career and success activation for people working in the eastern part of the home. West sector: Star 1 — career and knowledge. North-East: Star 4 — learning and creativity. Detailed placement requires analysis of the specific home and its construction year.

How to Activate Auspicious Sectors

Activating auspicious stars means 'awakening' their energy through movement, sound and the element appropriate to each star. Star 9 (South): red elements, candles, lamps — career activation in Period 9. Star 8 (Centre or North-East): ceramics, stone, yellow décor — wealth activation. Star 1 (North or West): fountains, aquariums, blue elements — career and knowledge activation. Star 4 (North-East): plants, green colours, bookshelves — learning and creativity activation. General principle: bedroom and office should be in sectors with auspicious stars. Do not renovate (noise activates) inauspicious sectors at an unfavourable time.

Neutralising Inauspicious Stars

Star 5 Yellow and Star 2 Black require neutralisation with metal objects. Traditional remedies: metal wind chimes, 6-rod metal wind chimes, metal sculptures or Tibetan singing bowls placed in inauspicious sectors. Star 3 Jade is neutralised by red colours and Fire elements. The critical rule: do not actively renovate the sector hosting Star 5 in 2026 — noise activates negative energy. If renovation is unavoidable, carry it out in a month when the monthly visiting star is auspicious and "suppresses" the 5. You must check not only the annual stars but also the "natal" stars of the home (from its construction period) — they form the base upon which annual changes are overlaid.

Flying Stars and Tong Shu — Combining Systems

Flying Stars (space + time) and Tong Shu (time of day) are complementary tools. A complete analysis of an auspicious date for an important action: (1) Check the day in Tong Shu — Officer and Breakers. (2) Check the home or office sector where you plan the activity — Flying Stars. (3) Check your Kua number — personal directions. (4) Check your zodiac sign — clashes with the year. All four layers together give a precise picture. For everyday planning, Tong Shu alone is sufficient. For critical decisions (buying a home, opening a business, a wedding), consulting a Feng Shui master who integrates all systems is worthwhile.
